Elders

Thank You
First of all a huge thank you to everyone who put time and effort into the reports for the AGM and for Emma chasing and collating them. It is a huge encouragement to be able to read all the myriad of ways God is at work in the life of the church and beyond.
Thank you to everyone who took part in the Prayer Day - and a particular thanks to those who organized it and the children's activities. The words and pictures that we captured on the day have also been transcribed and the Elders will be prayerfully considering these at our weekly morning prayer meetings.
Scarborough
Plans for the church weekend in Scarborough are progressing. The speaker is Rodney Breckon of New Life Baptist Church, Northallerton, and we are actively discussing at the moment what subject he will be taking up.
Teaching Programme for 2009
We are also planning the teaching programme for the first part of 2009. This will include a series on Origins (from Genesis) and a series on relationships (including marriage). Next year we will be looking at Easter from Luke's perspective.
Baptisms
The next Baptism Service will be on Sunday 21 September. If you are interested in being baptized, please speak with one of the Elders.
Leaving Party for Jim and Ruth
Don't forget the leaving party for Jim and Ruth announced in Bulletin 16: on Saturday 6 September in the evening, in Manor School. The joint Farewell Service will be in Archbishop Holgate's School on Sunday 7 September at 3pm.
There will be an Induction Service for Jim in the Ladywell Baptist Church in Livingston on Saturday 27 September.
Support for Dan Vopalecký
We have agreed to underwrite a co-sponsorship totalling £2400 over one year (or £200 per month from August 2008 to July 2009) for Dan Vopalecký. (For an explanation of this project, please see a separate notice circulated by Vladimir Andrle.) We hope, however, that God will prompt many YCC members to take part in this co-sponsorship by making a special addition to their regular giving to the church. Please refer to the notice circulated by Vladimir Andrle for advice on how to make your donations.

The Search Party for a New Pastor/Church Leader

The Search Party is chaired by Ian Thomson and its other members are Simon Bryan-Smith, Pat Willis, Les Wootten, Becki Dean, Tom Candlin and Jane Lewis.

We are currently drafting an advertisement for the new Pastor or Church Leader. The advert will be placed in the September issue of Christianity magazine, which is likely to come out in mid-August, and it will be posted up on www.jobsearchmonitor.com. It will be made available for circulation to people's contacts and networks from the end of July. If you have suggestions for organisations or networks where it should be sent, please let Jane Lewis know.

We expect to receive applications until 22 September and the interview process to take place during October.

Search for a New Church Worker
Ian Thomson has agreed to chair the search committee for a new church worker. This will commence as soon as possible, and although we are primarily seeking an experienced leader, we are also open to finding an associate through the same process.
Arrangements for Farewell to Jim and Ruth
There will be a YCC party at Manor School on Saturday 6 September.
On Sunday 7 September, normal Sunday morning services in Tang Hall and Osbaldwick will be cancelled; instead, there will be a joint service at 3pm, which ministers from other churches will be able to attend.

PRAYER PLANNING GROUP

YCC Day of Prayer
The YCC Day of Prayer will take place at St George's Methodist Church (corner of Millfield Lane and Tang Hall Lane) on Saturday 21 June. The programme is as follows:
10.15am-11.00am Devotions and Preparation for coming to God's presence in prayer.
11.00am-12.30pm Seeking Guidance for YCC: thanking, asking, waiting in silence, receiving.
12.30pm-11.15pm Lunch.
1.15pm-1.30pm Devotions and Preparation.
1.30pm-2.10pm Raising National Concerns to the Lord.
2.15pm-3.00pm Raising International Concerns to the Lord.
3.00pm-3.15pm Concluding Session with thanks and praise.
During 1.30pm-3.00pm, a quiet room will be set aside to give people the option of continuing to seek guidance for YCC instead of switching to national and international concerns.
A programme for children (ages 0 up to no fixed limit) will run concurrently in a nearby house. It is very important that parents tell Gillian Robinson in Osbaldwick or Vladimir Andrle or Ed Hambleton in Tang Hall as soon as possible if they are intending to bring their children, so that activities can be planned appropriately for group size and age mix. The activities will include prayer.
Lunch will be taken at St George's, adults and children together. Please bring your own sandwiches. Desserts and drinks will be provided.
Prayer Planning Group Membership
Vladimir Andrle is stepping down from PPG membership as of 22 June.

Bulletin 15, 8 May 2008

Elders

Please continue to pray for Jim and Ruth as they prepare for their move to Livingston.

Pray for us Elders as we seek God's will for the future and in particular what the shape of the full-time roles should be: do we just seek a straight replacement for Jim or does God have something else in store for us?

The next Elders' meeting is on 12 May.

Osbaldwick Leadership Support Group

The Osbaldwick leadership support group met for the first time on 27 April. Among other things, our discussions explored the makeup of our current Sunday morning congregation, timing and content of services, and provision for older children. Of particular note were the following items:

* The communion service operates with a number of “unwritten rules”, most of which are not rules at all, but still make it more difficult than need be for newcomers to contribute. We plan to publish a brief communion guide that will be displayed before the service.

* Setting up on Sunday morning will start 15 minutes earlier to ensure that all the technology is working properly and the music group can be playing when people arrive for the service.

* Items on the rota such as PA, setup, and welcome, will each gain an owner who will help ensure that the jobs are done well, and a broader range of people will be able to contribute.

We are still exploring how the group will operate, so the membership and approach may change, but currently we will meet about once a quarter. We already have a full agenda for next time, including looking at our work in the local community.

The group comprises Anita Watson, Ant Dean, Bryan Wootten, Claire Bashford, Tim Blackburn and Pat Willis. If you have any comments or concerns about Sunday mornings at Osbaldwick, please speak to one of these.

Prayer Planning Group

To support the Elders in their search for direction for YCC, a special Day of Prayer will be organized to take place during June or the beginning of July. It is hoped that many YCC people will come together to pray and wait on God. People who receive ideas, pictures and citations from the bible during their prayers will be encouraged to write them down and post them up for others to pray on, and for the Elders to consider over the summer. The Day will be organized into several thematic sessions, so that those who have the time can take part in the whole of the event while others can come only for a particular session. Provision will be made also for the participation of families with children. The date and venue will be announced shortly after the next Elders' meeting.

Bulletin 14, 24 April 2008

There are no new decisions or news.

Bulletin 13, 10 April 2008

Elders

Please Continue to Pray
Pray for us as we continue to seek God's guidance over the appointment of a new pastoral worker and also continue to pray for each other - particularly for those in our congregations who are facing difficult situations.
Church Weekend in Scarborough 9-11 January 2009
Letters and booking forms are out – please make sure to get hold of these. We are in the process of approaching suitable speakers and will confirm the speaker as soon as possible.
Pentecost in the Park on Sunday 11 May
This will be at Osbaldwick Primary School this year; an opportunity to celebrate together but also an opportunity to invite others along. There will be a picnic at 1pm and an open-air service at 3pm.  As in previous years we will not be holding normal services at either venue.  More details nearer the time.
Terry Courtney
Terry Courtney is on sabbatical from this Sunday. We are very grateful to Terry and Linda for their tireless service for YCC and wish them a restful and enjoyable break. Please do continue to pray for them and their family.
Helen Hewitson
Helen leaves for South Africa soon. She will be working in Durban, as a volunteer at a school for children with special needs, and also with a church that is active among the poorest people in the townships. Please remember to pray for her.

Prayer Planning Group

In March we did not have a Sunday Evening Home Prayer meeting, because the third Sunday of the month was taken up by the Easter outreach event in Tang Hall. But the schedule of having a one-hour prayer meeting at someone's house at 6pm on the third Sunday of each month resumes. The next meeting will be at 7 Elmpark Way, off Stockton Lane, on Sunday 20 April at 6pm. The main theme of prayer will be Evangelism – in the Church Context and in Personal Life.

Please refer to Bulletin 9 for more information about these prayer meetings and contact a member of the Prayer Planning Group if you can offer your home for the meeting on 18 May, or if you have a concern on your heart that could be made the main theme of prayer at that meeting.

Bulletin 12, 13 March 2008

Elders

Jennie Manning
We met with Jennie Manning during the last Elders' meeting and it was very encouraging to hear what God is doing in the youth work. Please continue to pray for Jennie and all the various teams who work with children and young people. God has really blessed us in this area.
Additional Pastoral Worker
As we have mentioned previously, we believe that God is leading us towards appointing an additional person to work alongside Jim. Whilst the role has not yet been formalised, we are seeking "God's person" for the role and are prepared to adjust the job description accordingly. If we were to go down this route it would potentially require an increase in giving of around a thirty-five percent. Currently we are not considering advertising for the role but seeking possible candidates through personal contacts. We would very much like to hear what you think, so please speak to an Elder to make your views known; and please, continue to pray into this issue.
Sabbatical for Terry Courtney
After 20 years as an Elder, Terry has expressed the desire to step back from Eldership responsibilities for about 6 months. The proposal is that Terry will take this break from mid-April to mid-October this year. This will give him time to focus on family matters and to allow space for a real rest and to be refreshed and re-energised. Please continue to pray for Terry and Linda and their family.
Teaching Programme
The underlying theme has been a focus on Jesus and his teaching. A couple of years ago we ran through the whole of Mark in a year, to get the outline of Jesus' life and teaching. Since then we have also covered the first block of Jesus' teaching - the Sermon on the Mount. This is what the teaching programme looks like for the rest of this year:
MARCH - finish the current Easter series;
APRIL-JUNE - return to the letter to the Romans and cover the 'practical application' sections now that we have covered the 'theological' ones;
JULY-AUGUST – a short series on spiritual disciplines (prayer, giving, etc), followed by (while we are a combined congregation) books of Daniel (covering the first part and the well-known stories) and Esther;
SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER – explore Matthew for Jesus' teaching on the Kingdom of God;
NOVEMBER - return to Daniel to cover the often ignored prophecies in the second half of the book and examine the New Testament themes found there;
DECEMBER - Christmas series, again from Matthew.
The programme also includes Pentecost in the Park, Harvest, Missionary Sundays and a joint celebration of YCC's 15th anniversary in November.
Church Council
After 7-8 years of excellent service as church treasurer, Ritchie Dealtry is having a rest from this role. Simon Bryan-Smith will become treasurer, and the bookkeeping will be carried out by an external bookkeeper, who has audited our accounts for the last few years. Ian Thomson will become vice-chair of the Council (trustees), to cover for Terry when he is not around. We thank Ritchie for all the work he has done as treasurer.

Bulletin 11, 28 February 2008

There are no new decisions or news.

Bulletin 10, 14 February 2008

Elders

What Am I Trusting God For?
In our devotions we were looking at Luke 18 - in particular Jesus' question in v41: "what do you want me to do for you?". We also pondered the question "what am I trusting God for?" and would invite everyone to prayerfully consider these questions too. Please continue to pray for us as we seek God's guidance.
Additional Pastoral Worker
In Bulletin 8 we have mentioned a possibility of appointing an additional pastoral worker. There will be an opportunity to find out more about this at the next "YCC Together" (business meeting) on Sun 9 March. We will explain more about our proposals and consider the implications (especially the financial ones); and you will be able to ask questions. Please make this meeting a priority. However, if you do have comments or questions now, please don't feel you have to wait until then - feel free to approach any of the Elders in the meantime.
Annual General Meeting
The date of the AGM has been set for Sunday 22 June – please put it in your diary.
Church Weekend Away
We have had very positive feedback about the last church weekend, from both yourselves and the the Holy Redeemer people. We will be therefore running another church weekend at Scarborough next year, along similar lines. The dates are 9-11 January 2009, at the Crown Hotel again. This is the only weekend available at the hotel. Prices have only gone up slightly from this year and will be: £94 per person for adults and £32 per child for children up to 16. We have investigated several alternative venues and nothing else provides what we need at a reasonable cost. Vladimir Andrle has undertaken to coordinate a team that will organise the event. Please let him know if you can help by joining the team and taking a lead in preparing or running any particular aspect of the weekend.
Men's and Women's Weekends
The Men's Weekend will take place at Pinecroft, Ingleton, on 30 May – 1 June. Matt Dungey and Danny Byrne are the contact persons for it in Osbaldwick and Tang Hall respectively.
The Women's Weekend will take place at Brockley Hall, Saltburn-by-the-Sea, on 3-5 October. Jen Dungey and Jenni Douglas are the contact persons.
There is also a Women's quiet day – Finding Stillness – taking place at St Hilda's Church on Saturday 8 March. Contact Jen Dungey or Jenni Douglas.

Sunday Evening Home Prayer Meetings
To expand the available range of opportunities for corporate prayer, it is suggested that a simple one-hour prayer meeting on a specific topic could be arranged to take place in someone's home on the third Sunday of each month from 6pm. This time-slot would then be protected, i.e., no other YCC event would be arranged for 6pm on 17 February, 16 March, 20 April etc.
*
If you have a concern on your heart, for which you would like to be joined in prayer by others, consider stepping forward to take a lead in one of these prayer meetings. Speak to any one of the PPG members (Vladimir Andrle, Diana Dunn, Ed Hambleton, Mark Lewis, Gillian Robinson, Norma and Les Wootten) to get help with arrangements and publicity. Get in touch also if you have an idea for a focus but would prefer someone else to lead.
*
If you can offer your house to be the venue of such a meeting, also speak to a PPG member. Please note that this should be just a short and simple prayer meeting of one hour maximum, during which no refreshments would be expected.
YCC Prayer Awayday Saturday
Please get in touch with a PPG member if you feel inspired by the idea of a Prayer Awayday on a Saturday this year, and would like to take part in shaping its programme and arrangements.

Elders

Additional Pastoral Worker
As we mentioned in the last Bulletin, one of the things that came out of our strategy day was the possibility of expanding the full time team of YCC.  Specifically we are considering an additional pastoral worker (and all the implications of that such as finance).  Please pray about this issue and let us know your thoughts.
Cooperation with Crossroads Church
Also, as we mentioned in Bulletin 7, we were meeting with the leaders from Crossroads Church.  We had a good time and a constructive conversation.  We are continuing to explore more ways of working together and will start by exchanging our respective programmes in order to look for opportunities to cooperate. Please pray about our relationship with Crossroads and all the other churches we work with, that we might see God's Kingdom extended in York.
Baptismal Service on 27 January
Just a reminder that we are holding a Baptismal Service at Acomb Baptist Church at 3pm on Sun 27 January.  If you would like to be baptised, it is not too late! Speak to one of the Elders.
Ignite and Engage
A new format for the youth programme is being launched in February. The programme will be split into Ignite (age 11-14) and Engage (age 15-18).  Please continue to pray for the young people and Jennie and the whole team.
Jim McNaughton's Day Off on Fridays
Thank you for respecting Jim's day off on Friday. We would continue to ask that you do not contact Jim on Fridays, thank you.  Please continue to pray for him and Ruth and the whole family.

Tang Hall Leadership Support Group

Everyone interested in Tang Hall community outreach is invited to a special meeting of the Community Group, which will take place at Simon and Nicky's house on Thursday 31 January, 8.30pm. We will review past community outreach events, learn from them, pray about the issues that arise, and plan a programme for 2008. The meeting will finish by 10pm.

Missionary Task Force

Pancake Party for International Students
The annual Pancake Party for International Students will take place in Tang Hall Community Centre on Friday 1 February, from 7pm. Your help would be much appreciated. If you can help with transport, making pancakes, setting the hall up or meeting the students, please contact any member of the Missionary Task Force for more details.
Membership of the Missionary Task Force
David and Betty Bell have left, Ed Hambleton has joined. MTF thus consists of Jenni Douglas, Diana Dunn, Michael Dunn, Andrew Dyer, Ed Hambleton, Ian Patrick, Bernard Trottet, Gerald Turner and Mary Turner.

Elders

Strategy Day
Thank you everyone who prayed and put forward suggestions for consideration. We had a very helpful meeting and considered where we are as a church and what we perceive to be the direction God is leading us in. We would like to share some of the key issues that arose. One of the things we did was to review each of the three "focus areas" that we set out:
GIFTS - We are going to take a longer look at Romans 12 as part of our Romans series, to focus on using the gifts God has given us. However, we need opportunities for people to use their gifts to complement the teaching on that subject. To this end we are considering some form of "ministry fair" next year to give everyone a chance to find out more about all the different aspects of the life of the church and give more opportunity for people to get involved.
COMMUNITY - We have been so encouraged this year by all the various community events and the support they have received from the church - thank you. Next year we aim to continue to provide events of this nature and we are likely to run them under the banner of "Hope 08".
YOUTH - Following an excellent proposal from Jennie, we are planning changes to the youth programme to serve better the needs of different age groups. The changes will be launched in the New Year.

Another important issue coming out of our discussions that we would like to bring to the church is: we are exploring the possibility of expanding the full-time team within YCC. We would ask you to pray with us on this matter and please speak to one of us and let us know what you think.

Thanks to Outreach Workers
Thank you to everyone who has been part of one of the recent Christmas outreach events - these have all been a real encouragement. This includes the Christmas Party and Christingle, the Lunch Club Christmas meal and the Mums and Toddlers nativity.
Joint Service on 6 January
We are having a joint New Year celebration at Archbishop Holgate's School on Sunday 6 January at 10:30am. The service will be all-age for the first half-hour or so, but there will be something separate for children and a crèche for the remaining hour. The service will not include communion.
Links with Crossroads Church
As part of our future strategy we are always considering how we can cooperate with other churches in York to further God's kingdom. Specifically at the moment, we are considering how best we can work together with our friends from Crossroads church and plan to have a meeting with the Crossroads leaders in January.

Tang Hall Leadership Support Group

Work with Children
The Sunday Club and crèche teams have been reviewing the organisation of the children's work at Tang Hall, in response to the changing age profile and teaching needs of the children. From the new Year, all the children will be together for the first 15-20 minutes, for a shared time of worship and prayer. We will then split into three groups: 3-5 years old; 6-8 years old; and a 'Junior Bible Class' for the children aged 9 and over. There will continue to be a crèche for the babies and toddlers.
We give thanks that the team has grown so that we can make these changes work. New team members are always welcome (especially men).
Membership of the Tang Hall Leadership Support Group
With the full backing of the Elders, the Tang Hall Leadership Support Group have approached Norman Ambler to join them. Norman has agreed and will take on this new role from January. We welcome Norman and look forward to his contribution to the group. Please pray for him and Pat.

Bulletin 8 will appear on Thursday 17 January 2008.

Church Expense Policy
YCC has a Financial Policy in place, which is approved by the Trustees. A copy of the full text is available from Terry Courtney. In keeping with this policy, it is important that anyone who intends to spend money on behalf of the church and then claim it back should get prior authorisation for the expenditure from the Trustees' Finance Sub-group (Terry Courtney, Ritchie Dealtry and Simon Bryan-Smith).
To apply for prior authorisation, please use a standard form which will be shortly distributed electronically to everyone on the YCC e-mail list. Hard copies of the form are also obtainable from the church office.
These arrangements are not intended to prevent necessary purchases. They are in place to ensure accountability to audit and ultimately to the Charity Commission.

More volunteers are needed for the preparation and running of the event – please speak to Lolly Mansfield or Naomi Stanton. (See Bulletin 1.)
Tang Hall Community Centre
Ignite have undertaken to paint the hall during the half-term week.

The course has only just started so it is not too late to invite people. Please continue to pray about who you may like to invite and please continue to support this event in prayer.
Hallelujah Party
We are planning a party for the night of Halloween (31st Oct) with the two aims being outreach to the local community and providing an alternative to trick or treat. We will need the support of so many volunteers, in so many different ways, so please do get involved! Contact the Church Office if you would like further information.
Church Weekend in Scarborough, 11-13 January 2008
There are still lots of places left so please do keep the bookings coming. Deposits are also required from those who have already booked.

Tang Hall Leadership Support Group

Laura Mansfield and Emma Hutchings have agreed to be the contact-and-liaison persons for Besom.

Missionary Task Force

The next Missionary Sunday will be on 28 October. The speaker in Tang Hall will be Steve McGowan, who is currently Director of OMF Northern England. His wife Lorna will speak at Osbaldwick. Both of them will also visit Ignite in the evening. Steve and Lorna served 17 years with OMF in Thailand. In August this year they took a team of 20 young people from their home church on an evangelistic football trip to Thailand.

Prayer Planning Group

In support of the Hallelujah Party on 31 October, members of the church are invited to take a prayer walk, singly or in groups, in the streets of Tang Hall and Osbaldwick. A rota of volunteers will be set up with the aim of making sure that there is at least one person taking a prayer walk in the area on each day of the period 18-31 October. There is no upper limit on the number of prayer walks in a single day – the more the better! A sheet with dates will be provided for volunteers to sign up in church (both in Osbaldwick and Tang Hall) on Sundays 7 and 14 October. Alternatively, the rota can be joined by replying to an e-mail that Vladimir Andrle will send out on Friday 5 October. For further information contact Vladimir or Gillian Robinson.

Alpha
This year our Alpha course is again a joint venture with the Heworth Methodist Church and the Holy Trinity Church. It starts on Tuesday 25 September. Details of the programme are on http://www.yorkcommunitychurch.co.uk/alpha.html. Please pray and consider whom you should encourage to attend and how you can help. Contact Terry Courtney.
Hallelujah Party
A safe, fun alternative to Halloween trick-or-treating will take place in Tang Hall Community Centre on Wednesday 31 October from 6.00pm to 7.30pm. It is for children aged 7-11 years. BOING will take part in this outreach event instead of its normal Wednesday meeting. Your help and prayers are needed. The tasks to be carried out include prior leafletting, preparation of party bags for the children to take home, welcome and registration at the door, leading crafts, drama and games, catering, meeting older children outside, and covering the whole event in prayer. Contact Nicky Bryan-Smith or Lolly Mansfield.

Tang Hall Leadership Support Group

On Sunday 9 December an outreach event will take place in Tang Hall Community Centre from 2pm, followed by Christingle at 4pm. The morning service will finish half an hour earlier than normal, to allow time for preparing the premises for the afternoon.

Prayer Planning Group

Prayer meetings will continue to take place in St George's Church on the first Saturday of each month, from 9.00am to 10.30am. Housegroups and other groups or individuals will take turns in leading the meetings. Leaders will be asked to define their themes so that they can be advertised during the last two weeks before each meeting.

The Prayer Planning Group has a new composition: Vladimir Andrle, Ed Hambleton, Mark Lewis, Gillian Robinson, Cynthia Wood and Les Wootten. Please pray that this new team will soon find its way of working together to promote corporate prayer within the church.
